Outside of his career in communications consulting, Vincent Mays has served as an active participant and volunteer for a variety of charitable organizations and nonprofits.
In particular, he is a proud supporter of a wide range of charities and projects that specifically work to provide communities with access to clean and safe water. He has worked with Water.org, Charity: Water and The Water Project. While all three initiatives are excellent and legitimate ways to achieve the clean water accessibility goal, Vincent Mays champions Water.org in particular.
While other water nonprofits typically focus on larger group efforts, Water.org allows volunteers to establish their own personal donation campaign. This allows for a direct connection between the volunteer and the organization — a relationship that brings power not only to the individual, but also to a much larger community.
Water.org is the brainchild of actor Matt Damon and engineer Gary White. Although the initiative has technically worked to end the global water crisis for over a quarter of a century, the organization is actually a merger of two similar initiatives. The combined efforts were Matt Damon’s H2O Africa Foundation and Gary White’s WaterPartners. Together, the two visionaries merged their efforts in order to impact more communities on a larger scale.
Through Water.org, volunteers can engage in a variety of donation efforts, including:
- Online fundraising campaigns
- Cause-focused events
- Company fund matching
Vincent Mays particularly supports this initiative because of its easily accessible online fundraising campaigns. While several other charitable organizations rely on in-person events, Water.org allows volunteers to contribute to the effort no matter where they are located in the world. By creating an online campaign, volunteers can share their fundraising with friends and family all with a simple share of a website link. This also allows for a more intimate connection between the donors and the overall effort, as some people may be more likely to contribute to the fundraising campaign of a friend or relative than a faceless initiative. Personal fundraising campaigns establish a sense of trust between donors and Water.org — a feature which Vincent Mays is particularly inspired by.
